In this article I’ll give you six questions to ask a seller before you buy their used piano. Armed with this information you should be able to find a great buy on an excellent instrument.
1 – Why are they Selling?
Are the sellers purchasing a new piano? If so, what did they dislike about the one they’re selling which they hope will be resolved with the new model? If the current owners suggest the piano just took up space or they need the money be careful, this can often mean they also haven’t spent time or money maintaining the instrument which will cost you above and beyond the asking price of the instrument.
2 – Who did the maintenance on the Piano
If a registered piano tuner and technician worked on the instrument frequently this is a good sign that they took care of the piano. If they say a friend did the maintenance, be aware that they could have made mistakes that will cause issues down the road. If they didn’t have the piano maintained then this is a sure sign of troubles that will pop up later on.
3 – Frequency of Tuning
If a piano is currently out of tune and you’re strongly considering buying it I will warn you to bargain for a great price or buy at your own risk. Why? Pianos should be tuned at least two times each year if played frequently. Not adhering to this maintenance schedule can result in other issues that could cost you later on. Another point is if the piano isn’t in tune when you first see it you can’t know if it’s out of tune due to it not being tuned in sometime or if there’s an underlying issue that will require repair if your purchase it. Is it just the fact it hasn’t been tuned in a while? or could it be something else causing the problem?
4 – How frequently was the Piano Played
Knowing how often a piano was played will help you learn if it was being tuned often enough. A piano that is just kept around as a decoration can get away with being tuned only once per year, pending the environment is right. If it’s played often two to four times per year is a better rule or thumb.
5 – How was the Piano Stored
The humidity and average temperature of a room are the two most important factors for the storage and/or location of a piano. At the upper end 55% humidity and about 22 degrees celsius is the max for a piano to be stored in. (or 72 degrees Fahrenheit). Basements and public storage facilities are usually not ideal locations for a piano to spend any of it’s life.
6 – Transport – Has the Piano been moved Around?
If a piano is moved frequently, either around a house or from location to location, it can damage the piano by hitting walls, doors etc or just by environment changes. Take notice of the location where the piano is in now. Are there any tight corners or door ways the piano may have had to go through to get into the room? These tight squeezes can mean a bigger bill for moving the piano if you choose to buy it.
Be sure to ask each of these questions of any potential seller before you buy a used piano. Any one of these items could be a deal breaker, or could help uncover a great deal on a piano that needs just a bit of TLC.

]]>For a group with an engagingly unique name, you’d expect them to already be somewhere close to the top by now. That might just be the case but the rise to fame and great album sales has most certainly been slow.
The members first came together in 2004. The original line up consisted of Josh Franceschi on lead vocals, Max Heyler on rhythm guitar, Matt Barnes on bass, Chris Miller on lead guitar and Joe Phillips on drums. Phillips was replaced by Dan Flint in 2006. Early on, the group was complete and solid enough to have been able to immediately start work on a You Me at Six discography. This wasn’t the case though. For two long years, the group simply concentrated on moving around and playing in various small gigs.
The year 2006 was therefore a special year for them. This was when they were able to push out We Know What it’s Like to be Alone, an EP with four tracks. The following year presented another break for the group as they sent out another four track EP. With these two releases, they started playing in better venues, one of the most important of which was Camden Underworld. This generated interest in You Me at Six merch.
The rising local support for the group eventually paved the way for the first official You Me at Six band album. Take Off Your Colours was released through Slam Dunk in 2008 and took the 25th spot in the UK charts. Two singles in the album, Finders Keepers and Kiss and Tell likewise took slots in the top 50 of the UK Singles Chart.
The taste of initial success was already clear proof that alternative music could use another band. By 2010, the band had completed another album, Hold Me Down which was released by Virgin Records. This was even better than its predecessor as proven by its 5th standing in the charts. The album sold well enough to garner a silver certification.
In the same year, the group added a new EP to the growing You Me at Six discography. They released Underdog which contained Fact-tastic which to date, is one of their more interesting pieces. Being able to read these tabs is essential for you to be able to play the right music. The basis for this notation consists of six horizontal lines each of which correspond to the keys on a guitar.
These lines will correspond with the guitar strings, A, D, G, B and E. By learning to read these tabs, you can play chords or single strings. For example, if there was a 0 on line G, for example, it would mean that G was to be played alone.
Where the letters are placed on the tabs will show you how the notes should be played.. For instance, if the notes are written in a line straight up and down, you would know to strum.. In other words, all of the strings would be played at the same time.
When the letters are strung out across the tab, you know that you should play each string separately.. It might show, for example, that one would play string A once and then string G once and then string D two times, etc.
